Alternative für Deutschland candidate René Stadtkewitz won a landslide victory in the mayoral election in Zehdenick, becoming the first directly elected AfD mayor in the state of Brandenburg. The result is the latest sign of the party’s growing strength, particularly in eastern Germany, where dissatisfaction with the federal government remains exceptionally high.
