Ryan Coogler’s blues-infused vampire epic Sinners received a record 16 nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the most ever earned by a single film, the Academy announced in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The film, set in 1930s Mississippi, surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. Sinners is nominated for best picture, best director and best original screenplay, while its lead actor Michael B Jordan earned a best actor nomination.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another finished second with 13 nominations. Joachim Trier’s Emotional Value, Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein each received nine nominations.
Four actors from One Battle After Another, Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, were also nominated in acting categories.
The nominees for the 98th Academy Awards were unveiled during a live broadcast from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. A total of 24 categories were announced, including the newly introduced casting award.

Ten films were nominated for best picture: Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Emotional Value, Sinners and The Tracks of Dreams.
For the first time in 25 years, the Oscars will include a casting category. Nominees include Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Emotional Value, The Secret Agent and Sinners.
The best actor lineup features Michael B Jordan alongside Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke and Wagner Moura. Best actress nominees include Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone.
In the directing category, Chloé Zhao, Josh Safdie, Paul Thomas Anderson, Joachim Trier and Ryan Coogler will compete for the Oscar.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on 15 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted once again by Conan O’Brien.
