400 new buses entered service last year, and by the end of March 2026, another 120 modern vehicles will be deployed, followed by an additional 180 by the end of the year, MÁV Group chief executive Zsolt Hegyi announced on Sunday.
He said that between 2025 and 2027, the MÁV Group will receive 1,000 brand-new Hungarian-made buses, with the final 300 entering passenger service in 2027. According to Hegyi, the fleet renewal is nationwide in scope, with new buses appearing in several counties from Győr–Moson–Sopron to Békés, significantly improving local and regional transport services.
As older vehicles are phased out, a fully 21st-century bus fleet is taking shape, he added. Hegyi stressed that Volán is making rapid progress toward building public transport that can compete with private car use both in price and quality. By the summer of 2026, all buses will be air-conditioned, while an increasing number of settlements will be served by accessible, barrier-free vehicles.
He also noted that by the end of 2027, there will be no obstacles to further bus fleet development, after which the focus of vehicle renewal will shift to rail, with preparations under way to procure more than 100 new multiple-unit trains.
In a separate statement, the MÁV Group said that MÁV Passenger Transport Ltd began taking delivery of another 120 buses in January, marking the next phase of a fleet renewal programme announced one year ago by Construction and Transport Minister János Lázár as part of a set of ministerial commitments.
Under the first stage of the programme, a contract for 869 new buses was signed in early September last year with Kravtex Ltd, with 400 vehicles already delivered and placed into service in 2025. With the latest Credobus Econell Next buses manufactured by the Kravtex-Kühne Group, the number of new vehicles added to the Volán fleet within a single year has now exceeded 500.
The newly deployed buses will mainly serve areas connected to the modernization of the Budapest–Belgrade railway line, particularly in Pest and Bács–Kiskun counties. Additional priority regions include the Mátra area, as well as Győr–Moson–Sopron, Somogy, Borsod–Abaúj–Zemplén, Fejér, Komárom–Esztergom, Nógrád and Békés counties, where smaller groups of vehicles will enhance local and regional transport services.
