A candidate of Hungary’s main opposition party, Tisza, is facing backlash after telling a bizarre fictional sexual story—described as a ‘joke’ by his own standards—involving Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and an underage girl during a campaign rally. At the same event, Zsolt Judák also urged attendees not to engage ‘too much’ with Orbán’s supporters, as they are delusional.
The incident took place during Tisza’s nationwide tour in Harta, a village of around 3,000 in central Hungary. The rally was attended by opposition leader Péter Magyar, a former member of the inner circles of the governing Fidesz party, as both major political camps seek to mobilize voters less than a month before the high-stakes parliamentary election scheduled for 12 April.
However, the rally took an unexpectedly dark turn when Judák encouraged Tisza supporters to ensure they vote in April and engage in political discussions with their ‘neighbours, friends and even Fidesz supporters’. ‘But don’t spend too much time on them, because they’ll drain your time and energy, and your pulse—which is normally around 72 per minute—will go up to at least 140–150…you won’t be able to convince them,’ Judák said.
He then continued with a fictional story of his own invention to illustrate what he perceives as the alleged irrationality and foolishness of Fidesz voters. The story, or ‘joke’, according to Judák, was as follows:
‘In the last room at the end of the long, dark corridor of the Carmelite [the office of the prime minister], Viktor Orbán is found with an underage girl. This gets broadcast on TV, and they will tell us that this little wh*re raped our beloved prime minister. The girl should be sent to the juvenile detention facility on Szőlő Street—which of course no longer exists—and the parents should also be made an example of, for how well they raised their child. So that’s all about the hardcore Fidesz supporters—there’s no need to deal with them.’
The perverted fiction—described as, by the way, ‘quite embarrassing’ by Tisza-aligned outlet Telex—prompted Péter Magyar to intervene, stating that he did not find the ‘last joke’ funny. He added that Judák’s comments demonstrated why Tisza candidates should not speak freely and without preparation—for an awkwardly long period of time, Magyar had been the party’s sole speaking head, while candidates were prohibited from speaking to the press. According to the Tisza leader, Judák made the remarks because ‘his social media presence isn’t very active, and he wanted this recent appearance in the news to help him shift into a higher gear’.
Following widespread backlash, Judák issued an apology in a post on his Facebook page, stating that he had been ‘nervous’ and ‘made a mistake’, as he was ‘not used to speaking in front of hundreds of people’. It is also notable that several families, including children, were present in the audience, hearing every word of Judák’s sick fantasy. ‘In the Tisza community, there are many of us, and we are very different. We are not professional politicians...We make mistakes, and we will continue to make mistakes,’ Judák concluded.
