The Hungarian government has decided to extend the deadline of its national petition until 8 April, according to a statement by Parliamentary State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office Balázs Hidvéghi, shared on Thursday via social media.
Hidvéghi said the extension comes in response to what he described as intensified pressure from Ukraine since the petition was launched. He claimed that recent developments include the suspension of oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline, the transit of Ukrainian gold shipments across Hungary, and threats directed at Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Despite these developments, the government maintains that Hungary should remain outside the conflict. Hidvéghi emphasized that the country does not want to become involved in the war or allocate Hungarian financial resources to Ukraine.
He noted that extending the deadline allows more citizens to participate and ensures that Hungary’s response is clearly communicated to Brussels and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The petition asks the public to weigh in on three key issues: whether Hungary should contribute financially to the war, whether Hungarian funds should support Ukraine, and whether citizens are willing to accept higher utility and fuel costs linked to changes in energy policy.
According to Hidvéghi, the government’s position on all three questions is firmly negative. He reiterated that the administration prioritizes stable, affordable energy and aims to protect households and businesses from rising costs.
He urged those who have not yet participated to submit their responses, either online or by mail, before the new 8 April deadline, stressing that public input is essential in shaping Hungary’s stance on these issues.
