The living conditions of most Hungarians have improved in recent years despite a series of global challenges, according to a new survey by the Mária Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS). The findings point to rising incomes, stronger household wealth, and increasing life satisfaction across the country.
Even amid the combined pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, and broader economic difficulties across Europe, a majority of respondents reported positive changes in their personal lives. Seven out of ten Hungarians said their families had made progress over the past decade, whether by moving into a new home, renovating their property, or purchasing a car. This trend was particularly pronounced among families with children, who have been among the main beneficiaries of recent family policy measures.
Data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office supports these findings. According to its ‘How We Live’ survey, the average household wealth rose to 61.6 million forints by 2023, while households with children reported even higher average wealth of 66.6 million forints.
Income growth has also followed a strong upward trajectory. Between 2015 and 2024, per capita income within households increased two and a half times, with even greater gains recorded among large families and single-parent households. The KINCS survey similarly found that most respondents experienced income growth, with above-average increases reported by families raising children.
Living standards have remained stable or improved despite the turbulent environment. Four out of five Hungarians said they now live better or at least as well as they did ten years ago. Official data shows that satisfaction with financial circumstances rose from 5.3 to 5.9, while overall life satisfaction increased from 6.1 to 7.5 between 2015 and 2025. The most significant improvements were recorded among young people and married individuals.
Beyond households, development has also been visible at the local level. Nearly three-quarters of respondents said their place of residence had improved. This is reflected in stronger municipal finances: between 2015 and 2024, revenues from local business taxes increased 2.4 times, while taxable income per taxpayer rose 2.7 times.
Overall, both statistical data and survey responses indicate that Hungarians are living under better financial and social conditions than a decade ago. Rising incomes, growing wealth, and improving local environments have contributed to higher living standards and greater life satisfaction, even during a period defined by significant external challenges.
