The unemployment rate in Hungary stood at 4.5 per cent as of March 2026, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office of Hungary (KSH).
With this figure, the country ranks eighth among the 27 EU Member States, tied with Croatia, based on the latest available Eurostat data from January 2026. Hungary trails only Poland (3.1 per cent), Bulgaria (3.1 per cent), Czechia (3.2 per cent), Malta (3.4 per cent), Germany (4.0 per cent), the Netherlands (4.0 per cent), and Cyprus (4.2 per cent) in terms of low unemployment, while remaining comfortably below the EU average of 5.8 per cent.
As the Hungarian business outlet Profitline.hu elaborates, in March 2026, the number of employed persons within the working-age population (15–74-year-olds) reached 4.646 million, marking a noticeable rebound from the multi-year low recorded earlier in the year. Employment rose by roughly 30,000 over the course of a single month, although it still remains 55,000 below the level seen in March of last year.
The three-month trend also showed improvement, albeit at a more moderate pace, increasing by 4,600 to reach 4.627 million. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed individuals fell by 12,000, down to 219,000 in March. As the economically active population expanded by 18,000, the resulting monthly unemployment rate came in at 4.5 per cent—slightly better than both prior expectations and overall market consensus. By comparison, the unemployment rate averaged 4.7 per cent over the period between January and March.
