More details have emerged about Monday’s horrific attempted beheading carried out by 30-year-old Sudanese migrant Hadi Alodid against a local man in his forties in north Belfast, Northern Ireland.
While the case had already sparked a significant public reaction—as demonstrated by the large-scale anti-immigration protests held on Tuesday in Belfast and elsewhere across the United Kingdom, as well as the riots that followed—public outrage is expected to intensify further as additional information continues to emerge.
According to media reports, the victim, 44-year-old Stephen Ogilvie, is now facing a lifetime of consequences from injuries so severe that he has lost an eye and may never fully recover.
Evidence presented in court on Wednesday revealed that Ogilvie lost his left eye during the attack and suffered extensive injuries to his face, neck, and back. Reports also indicate that his right eye was damaged, raising concerns about the long-term impact on his vision.
The injuries were inflicted during a frenzied knife assault that bystanders described as an apparent attempt to behead him before members of the public and responding police officers intervened.
Reacting to the new details, Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe wrote in a post on X that ‘men who inflict this brutal evil on others do not deserve to live,’ reaffirming the party’s earlier support for capital punishment in such cases.
As Ogilvie continues his recovery, neighbours have begun speaking publicly about the man behind the headlines. Residents described him as a ‘vulnerable member’ of the community who had lived in the area for around a year and a half. According to neighbours, he lived alone and was known to many local residents.
One resident told reporters that people in the area regularly looked out for him, while another described the attack as ‘absolutely horrendous’ and said nobody deserved to suffer such violence. Reports from neighbours suggest that Ogilvie was deaf in one ear and struggled with personal difficulties, making the brutality of the attack particularly distressing for those who knew him.
Messages of support have flooded social media since his identity became public. Friends and local residents have shared photographs of Ogilvie and posted appeals for prayers and support as he fights to recover from injuries that many witnesses initially believed would prove fatal. Several neighbours said they feared he had died at the scene before emergency services arrived.
The victim’s family has also broken its silence. In a public statement, relatives said they were ‘completely devastated’ by what had happened but appealed for calm following the riots and anti-migration unrest that erupted after the attack. They thanked the members of the public, police officers, and medical staff who helped save Stephen’s life; however, they stressed that violence should not be carried out in his name.

The case returned to court on Wednesday, where Hadi Alodid appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder, possession of a knife in a public place, and making threats to kill. Bail was refused and the case was adjourned until 8 July.
During the hearing, Judge Steven Keown said his thoughts were with Ogilvie and his family and praised the emergency responders and members of the public whose actions helped prevent what could otherwise have become a murder case.
