US Vice President JD Vance is currently on a media tour, promoting his new book Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith. As part of that tour, he made an appearance on The View, a political and current affairs talk show on the ABC network, on Tuesday, 16 June.
The programme is geared toward a female audience, as signified by the six female permanent hosts—and they are certainly no fans of President Donald Trump.
Evidently, JD Vance was fully aware of the political leanings of the show. That is why one of the first things that came out of his mouth was a joke, saying: ‘This is a show for MAGA Republicans, right? That is what my media team told me.’ This is also why the headline ‘JD Vance went on television to plug a faith memoir. “The View” had other plans’ by the Associated Press reporting on the event is rather absurd—no, Vice President Vance did not come into The View expecting a friendly interview where he could relax and promote his book…
And, as expected, the grilling began almost immediately.
It started with conservative—but also frequent Trump critic—Alyssa Farah asking Vance about the state of the economy. Gas prices and inflation certainly worsened since the US–Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February and the consequent conflict. However, as VP Vance pointed out, gas prices had started to decrease even before the US–Iran deal was announced last weekend; and both metrics were a lot worse for Americans during the year the midterm elections were taking place under President Biden in 2022.
Back then, annual inflation peaked at 9 per cent, compared to a recent high of 4.2 per cent. Meanwhile, the average price of a gallon of gasoline reached a record $5.016 in June 2022.
Vice President Vance was also extensively asked about the case of deceased sex trafficker and paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Host Ana Navarro suggested that President Trump signed the Epstein Transparency Act ‘under duress’ in November 2025, after he failed to convince Republican Representatives not to vote for it.
In response, Vance lauded the 3.5 million pages of court documents released by the Trump administration related to the Epstein case. He also claimed that President Trump had reported him to the police, which is in part what led to the infamous sex criminal’s first arrest in July 2006.
JD Vance Leaves Whoopi Goldberg Baffled
The part of the interview that was highlighted by right-wing social media personalities was a brief exchange between actress, comedienne, and View host Whoopi Goldberg—perhaps the best-known name in the cast—and guest Vance.
Goldberg asked why the Trump administration is ‘stigmatizing’ people of colour, and why it is erasing black history. However, when VP Vance pushed back and asked for specific instances, the host struggled to come up with any.
Most likely, she was referring to President Trump’s efforts, even some executive orders, to give less emphasis on the evils of slavery in American history exhibitions at publicly funded museums, such as the Smithsonian. Instead, he wants these exhibits to focus more on the virtues of people in early American history, not their faults, for a more optimistic, more pro-USA message.
