Wizz Air is preparing for one of its busiest summer seasons to date, with the airline planning to operate around 1,200 flights per day during the peak travel period, it said on Friday in a statement.
The airline will expand its summer capacity with 15 new routes, 19 additional aircraft and nearly three million extra seats, representing an increase of roughly 30 per cent compared to the same period last year.
To manage the increased operational pressure, Wizz Air is reactivating an expanded summer response task force at its operations control centre. The team will work around the clock and coordinate directly with customer service, ground handling teams and communications staff to respond quickly in case of disruptions.
The airline said operations will also be supported by artificial intelligence, while cooperation with Hungary’s air navigation service provider HungaroControl will help optimize scheduling, including bringing forward the first early-morning departures to create a more stable daily timetable.
Wizz Air is also adjusting its scheduling system to improve its ability to recover from delays and minimize knock-on disruptions across its network.
Passengers are being asked to arrive at airports at least two hours before departure due to the expected seasonal congestion.
The airline has also introduced a new ‘delay assistance’ service, available during booking. The system automatically monitors flight status on the day of travel and alerts passengers if their flight is delayed by more than two hours or cancelled. It then provides a rebooking interface where passengers can switch to another flight to the same destination up to a set value limit.
If suitable alternatives are not available, passengers may request a full refund, including the original ticket price and any additional services purchased, such as Wizz Priority or checked baggage. Passengers may also still choose to travel on the originally booked flight if they prefer.
A new feature called Wizz Link has also been introduced, allowing passengers to merge separately booked trips into a single itinerary for easier management when travelling via multiple cities.
Wizz Air noted that in May it achieved a 99.99 per cent completion rate across its network, while 82.67 per cent of flights arrived within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
During the summer months, the airline will operate its network of nearly 200 destinations across multiple continents using a fleet of 269 aircraft. More than 4,000 cabin crew members, alongside thousands of engineers and operational staff, will be involved in running the operation.
