Microsoft has reaffirmed its commitment to console exclusives, saying Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are only the first titles in a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the Xbox platform.
Speaking to GamesRadar, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said the two upcoming games are not the only first-party titles that will remain exclusive to Xbox consoles.
‘To grow a platform like ours, you have to have exclusive games and services,’ Ball said. ‘These are not going to be the only two titles.’
The comments come after Microsoft surprised many players during last month’s Xbox Games Showcase by confirming that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution would not launch on PlayStation 5. The company later clarified that neither game is a timed exclusive, meaning there are currently no plans to release them on Sony’s console.
The announcements marked a shift from Microsoft’s recent multiplatform strategy, which has seen several major Xbox franchises—including Gears of War: Reloaded, Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable—announced for PlayStation 5. That mixed approach has left players uncertain about which future titles will remain Xbox-exclusive.
Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said exclusivity decisions will continue to be made individually rather than under a fixed rule.
While noting that major live-service games are expected to remain multiplatform, Booty cautioned against assuming all single-player titles will be exclusive.
‘I wouldn’t overly fixate on single-player,’ he said. ‘That’s a good rule of thumb, but it certainly isn’t something that’s carved in stone.’
Booty added that Microsoft manages more than 20 gaming franchises that have each generated over $1 billion in lifetime revenue, requiring different release strategies depending on each title’s role within the company’s portfolio.
Ball said Microsoft has an internal framework for determining exclusivity but acknowledged that the decision-making process has not always been clear to players. He said the company intends to communicate its strategy more transparently.
The executives also argued that exclusive content remains essential to building and maintaining a gaming platform. Ball compared the approach to industries such as television, music, and film, saying successful platforms have historically relied on exclusive content.
The renewed focus on exclusives comes as Xbox continues to reshape its business following a major corporate restructuring that included thousands of job cuts earlier this month. Microsoft says it is seeking to balance support for its development teams with its evolving platform strategy.
