Hungary will host the final global boxing qualification tournament ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, following a decision by World Boxing.
The Hungarian Boxing Association (MÖSZ) announced on Friday that World Boxing’s executive board approved the bid during a meeting in Glasgow on Thursday. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Hungary in May 2028 and will represent the final opportunity for boxers to qualify for the Los Angeles Games.
World Boxing President Gennady Golovkin said the decision reflected the organization’s continued progress both inside and outside the ring.
‘The decisions made today demonstrate that World Boxing has taken another major step forward. From selecting the hosts for the Olympic qualification pathway and strengthening our governance to expanding our global membership and preparing for our congress, we are building a stronger, more transparent organization that is ready to secure boxing’s future within the Olympic movement,’ Golovkin said.

Hungarian Boxing Association President István Kovács described the award as a historic achievement for the country’s boxing community.
‘I am still trying to take in the fact that we will host an Olympic qualification tournament,’ Kovács said. ‘I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this possible. In just two years, we have gone from an organization that practically did not exist to becoming the centre of the boxing world by hosting an event of this magnitude.’
Kovács said the tournament would carry sporting significance comparable to a world championship because it would be the final Olympic qualifying event.
‘Hungary previously hosted a world championship in 1997, but this qualification tournament has even greater sporting value. Hungary has never before hosted or even bid for an Olympic world qualifying tournament, so this will be a historic event for both Hungarian sport and Hungarian boxing,’ he added.
Before the Hungarian event, continental qualification tournaments will be held, including the European qualifier, which will take place in Istanbul as part of the 2027 European Games. Italy will then stage the first global qualification tournament.
The boxing competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be contested in seven men’s and seven women’s weight categories. The Games are scheduled to take place from 14 July to 30 July 2028.
