Labour MP for North London Stella Creasy, who has described herself as a ‘proud feminist’ multiple times during her career, has received a lot of backlash online for attending the Milad Al Nabi march in London, United Kingdom, this past weekend.
It was the 46th edition of the annual march, in which the Muslim believers of Britain celebrate the birth anniversary of their Prophet Muhammad.
Social media users, however, noticed in the footage shared by MP Creasy that it only featured men. Columnist for The Times Jenni Russell asked her in the replies: ‘Where are the women, Sella Creasy? Why are they excluded? Do explain.’ To which the Labour MP replied: ‘No they are not—why not come next year and see for yourself?’
When further pressed on the issue by Russell on X, MP Creasy did admit ‘many religions do have separate events and structures’, and that the event she attended and promoted was in fact gender-segregated, despite being a self-proclaimed feminist.
She later shared a video of herself with a number of women wearing black burqas and—for some reason—yellow visibility vests. In the caption for the video, MP Creasy described the young Muslim women around her as ‘the future optometrists, lawyers, accountants, surgeons and leaders of our community and country.’
That post has also received a lot of negative attention. Users in the comments criticize the British government’s immigration policy as a whole, going so far as to call the MP a ‘traitor’ or to draw attention to the mistreatment of women in Islamic cultures.
A piece by the Daily Mail covering the story points out that MP Creasy is a lot less tolerant of gender segregation if it is done by her fellow British people.
In 2022, MP Creasy criticized the 200-year-old Garrick Club, describing it as an ‘old boys’ club’ whose membership rules disadvantaged women, as the organization faced pressure to allow more female members. The senior Labour MP came under fire from Conservatives today, who accused her of promoting ‘divisive’ politics.
Joy Morrissey, the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, told the Daily Mail: ‘This is the same Labour MP who believes it is perfectly acceptable for men to use women’s toilets, yet apparently objects to them attending the same event.’
‘Stella Creasy should know better than to participate in such divisive and exclusionary behaviour,’ she continued. ‘The Conservatives’ Culture and Integration Commission will examine how we can bring an end to this.’
