A joint awareness campaign aimed at protecting the natural environment of Lake Balaton has been launched by the Strand Festival and the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute to mark World Water Day.
The initiative, titled ‘Love Lake Balaton’, seeks to draw attention to the lake’s ecological value and encourage visitors to adopt environmentally conscious behaviour while spending time in the region.
As part of the campaign, educational content will be shared on the festival’s social media platforms, presenting the functioning of the lake, its environmental challenges and conservation efforts in an accessible format.
Researchers from the institute will also take part in the festival in person. Between 19–22 August in Zamárdi, they will host interactive programmes designed to bring scientific knowledge closer to the public.
Visitors will be able to participate in field demonstrations and test equipment used to analyse the water quality of Lake Balaton. Through algae samples and microscope observations, attendees can explore the lake’s microscopic ecosystem.
Additional presentations will focus on water chemistry, explaining key processes taking place in the lake. Live aquariums will showcase characteristic fish species, while interactive exhibits will highlight the impact of human activity and pollutants on the ecosystem.
According to Gábor Vasas, director general of the research institute, the cooperation provides an opportunity for festivalgoers to gain direct insight into the functioning of the lake and the challenges involved in preserving it.
Festival director Kata Ádám said the event’s programme and communication this year place a strong emphasis on promoting Lake Balaton.
Organizers said the goal is for the festival to offer not only musical experiences but also contribute to raising environmental awareness among visitors. The campaign’s central message encourages participants to enjoy the lake responsibly while helping to protect it.
