The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden will open the central hall of its long-awaited Biodome in mid-summer, introducing a year-round ‘urban oasis’ designed to offer visitors an immersive natural experience regardless of the weather.
The 1.7-hectare structure will initially make nearly one hectare of its central space accessible to the public. The indoor environment is designed to simulate tropical and subtropical ecosystems, allowing visitors to explore lush greenery and encounter a variety of rare species throughout all four seasons.
Around 13,000 plants will be installed inside the Biodome, creating a dense, exotic landscape. Among the animal highlights will be hulmans, critically endangered Bali mynas, and spurred tortoises. The atmosphere of the central hall will be further enhanced by multi-level botanical and zoological exhibits, as well as a dramatic waterfall cascading from a height of 14.5 metres.
The project is being developed as part of a 350 million forint investment. Of this, 300 million forints come from the zoo’s own revenue, while an additional 50 million forints has been provided by the Budapest municipal government.
Work on the Biodome has been ongoing for months, including the creation of nearly 3,000 square metres of planting areas, alongside green walls, artificial rock formations and other visual elements designed to enhance the immersive experience.
The Biodome site has already hosted several temporary events in recent years, including lantern festivals, light art exhibitions, photography displays and dinosaur-themed showcases. Since December 2023, more than 311,000 visitors have attended events held in and around the facility.
With the opening of the central hall, the Biodome is expected to become one of Budapest’s most distinctive new attractions, blending conservation, education and entertainment in a unique indoor environment.
