Canadian schoolchildren fled a theatre performance about Indigenous rights after a drag performer allegedly began acting ‘inappropriately’, including gyrating and ‘putting their boobs in kids’ faces’, according to media reports.

As the Daily Mail reported, students from Campbell Collegiate in Saskatchewan were pulled out midway through a performance at the Globe Theatre this week after the ‘production reached levels of maturity beyond expectations,’ according to teachers.

Reports state that the controversy centred around drag performer Nick Miami Benz, who appeared in a courtroom drama about an Indigenous person fighting for ancestral land rights, titled Little Red Warrior & His Lawyer. Benz was playing the role of Desmona, the wife of an attorney in the production, which had been rated suitable for audiences aged 14 and above.

However, footage circulating on social media prompted controversy. Benz, who uses they/them pronouns, appeared on stage in fishnet tights, thigh-high boots, and a see-through corset, while students were later seen filing out of the theatre as the performance continued.

According to the Daily Mail, one scene showed a judge bending over and appearing to smell ‘Benz’s behind’, after which the performer leapt into the air and began jumping up and down in front of the audience, which included schoolchildren.

Teachers eventually instructed their classes to leave and later informed parents that they had exercised ‘professional discretion’ in ending the visit early and intended to raise concerns with the theatre.

Students also appeared unsettled by the performance. A Snapchat video apparently recorded by a student during the show was captioned: ‘Guys wtf is this play. NO WAY THIS IS A SCHOOL TRIP.’

The school defended its initial decision to bring students to the performance, stating that it regularly organizes biannual theatre visits to the Globe Theatre and had previously had ‘great experiences’ with similar outings. However, it also acknowledged that the production ‘reached levels of maturity beyond expectations,’ adding that it would contact the theatre to ‘discuss the age rating and provide feedback’ regarding the performance.

The incident triggered major backlash online, with critics describing the show as ‘X-rated’. Many users praised the teachers for intervening and escorting students out of the theatre. ‘Good for the Campbell staff for reacting instead of just sitting there and letting the kids get visually assaulted by this,’ one commenter wrote.
