Vehicles operated by Google will return to Hungary from 19 March to capture new 360-degree panoramic imagery for the Google Maps platform, the company announced on Thursday.
According to the statement, the Google Street View cars will travel through more than 50 Hungarian settlements during this year’s data collection period, using specialized camera systems to update the service’s image database.
The goal of the update is to ensure that the mapping platform accurately reflects the constantly changing environment, helping users navigate more easily and plan their journeys.
Google said its mapping service has more than two billion monthly active users worldwide and includes information, reviews and ratings for roughly 250 million businesses and locations. Street View is currently available in more than 100 countries and territories, and its database contains approximately 280 billion images.
The service has been operating in Hungary since 2013, with several updates carried out over the years, most recently in 2025.
In addition to Budapest, Street View vehicles will be seen this year in cities including Debrecen, Kecskemét, Pécs, Veszprém, Siófok, Zalaegerszeg, Nagykanizsa and Keszthely.
The Street View database is built partly from content uploaded by users and partly from imagery collected directly by Google. The service allows users to explore cities, tourist attractions and natural landmarks around the world virtually.
Through the Street View interface, users can also visit iconic or difficult-to-access locations such as the Amazon Basin, Antarctica, Machu Picchu, Grand Canyon, Venice, the Eiffel Tower, the Burj Khalifa or even the International Space Station.
In Hungary, users can also explore pedestrian streets in many cities and locations that are inaccessible by car, including areas along Lake Balaton or around the Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park.
Google added that special attention is paid to privacy when capturing and publishing images. The system automatically blurs faces and vehicle licence plates, and users can request additional blurring of details such as buildings or vehicles through the ‘Report a problem’ function.
