Around 900 Hungarian high school students will gather in Sátoraljaújhely, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, in the northeastern part of Hungary, from Sunday, 9 August for the third National Hungarian High School Camp, according to an announcement by the Rákóczi Association.
The week-long event will bring together students from across the Carpathian Basin as well as Hungarian communities living around the world. Participants will arrive from Hungary, Slovakia, the Partium region, Transylvania, the Csángó communities, Vojvodina and Transcarpathia, Hungary Today reports.
Hungarian diaspora communities will also be represented, with students attending from the United States, Canada, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Cyprus and Colombia.
According to the organizers, the camp is intended to strengthen participants’ sense of national belonging while giving young people an opportunity to meet one another, form friendships and establish connections that can last beyond the event.
Two other camps will take place alongside the main programme. The Polish–Hungarian student camp, organized jointly by the Felczak Foundation and the Rákóczi Association, will welcome 100 young people from Poland. A separate media camp will also be held as part of the programme.
Founded in Budapest in 1989, the Rákóczi Association is dedicated to supporting Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin and around the world, particularly in the areas of language, culture and community life. Much of its work focuses on young people through school choice initiatives and various youth programmes.
