An outdoor exhibition showcasing some of Hungary’s most prominent scientific minds has opened in downtown Washington, DC, with Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Katalin Karikó attending the launch.
Titled Martians, the installation presents leading figures of Hungarian science and is on display in front of the Kossuth House, a Hungarian cultural centre in the US capital. The exhibition also connects to celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, highlighting scientists who achieved major success in the United States or pursued research there.
Speaking after the opening, Karikó said Hungarian scientific achievements continue to play an important role in American research and contribute significantly to global knowledge. She expressed hope that scientists working abroad would also enrich Hungary’s scientific landscape through their work.
She added that science serves as a common language, allowing researchers from different backgrounds to quickly understand one another.
Karikó is also set to receive an award at a gala organized by the Hungarian American Coalition, to be held at the Library of Congress as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Balázs Gulyás, president of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, welcomed the exhibition’s arrival in the United States, noting that it features 55 distinguished Hungarian scientists, including Nobel laureates and others who have contributed to the advancement of human knowledge.
According to Margó Kósa, head of the Hungarian Brand Cultural Association that created the exhibition, the installation travelled for weeks to reach the US.
After its run in Washington, where it will remain on display for four weeks, the exhibition is set to tour several American cities, including Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Daytona Beach and Chicago.
