Hungary is working to restore full access to the Erasmus+ programme for its students and educators, according to Zoltán Tarr, vice president of the Tisza Party and head of its European Parliament delegation.
In a statement shared on social media, Tarr said Europe is once again opening up to Hungarian youth, adding that efforts are underway to ensure the programme becomes fully accessible without restrictions.
He noted that during last week’s plenary session, members of the European Parliament approved an increased budget for Erasmus+ in the next financial period. The programme’s funding has been raised to 47.4 billion Euros, more than six billion above the original proposal.
Tarr described the potential restoration of Erasmus+ access as a turning point, signalling the end of what he called a period of isolation for Hungarian students and academic institutions. He said the goal is to rebuild trust with European partners and restore Hungary’s credibility within the EU.
According to Tarr, negotiations are ongoing to remove administrative and political barriers that have limited participation in the programme. He added that efforts are focused on enabling Hungarian students to benefit from Erasmus+ opportunities as soon as possible, potentially even within the current year.
The politician emphasized that expanding access to international education is a priority, aiming to ensure that all Hungarian students can once again take part in exchange programmes, study abroad opportunities and academic cooperation across Europe.
If successful, the move would mark a significant step in reconnecting Hungary’s higher education sector with broader European networks and opportunities.
