Hungary has joined a European initiative designed to enhance forest protection and promote sustainable forest management, the Ministry for the Living Environment (ÉKFM) announced on Wednesday.
According to the ministry, protecting forests and ensuring their sustainable use requires cross-border cooperation and coordinated policy action. As a result, Hungary has signed the Stockholm Ministerial Declaration, adopted during the 10th Ministerial Conference of FOREST EUROPE in June.
The ministry said the conference represents the highest-level forum for European cooperation on forest policy, providing participating countries with an opportunity to discuss strategic forestry issues, assess shared challenges and define future directions for cooperation.
By signing the declaration, Hungary reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable forest management and to strengthening the resilience of forests in the face of growing environmental pressures.
The ministry stressed that challenges such as climate change, forest fires and other global environmental threats can only be addressed effectively through international cooperation.
Officials noted that the future of Hungary’s forestry sector will be shaped by broader European collaboration that promotes the integration of scientific research into policymaking, supports innovation through partnerships and encourages the use of digital technologies in forest management.
The ministry highlighted that climate change is expanding the geographical reach of wildfire risks. While forest fires were once primarily associated with Mediterranean countries, they are increasingly becoming a threat in Central and Northern Europe as well.
As part of the initiative, Hungary has strengthened cooperation with representatives from Spain, Portugal and Turkey, who presented prevention measures and monitoring systems that could help reduce wildfire risks across Europe.
The ministry said these exchanges of expertise and best practices will contribute to improving preparedness and resilience as European countries face increasingly complex environmental challenges.
