Hungary has become a major regional centre for scientific research and education in animal welfare by 2026, the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest said in a statement on Monday.
The university noted that major research centres also operate at universities in neighbouring countries, but said Hungary’s model of cooperation across institutions and scientific disciplines is unique in the region.
According to the statement, the system connecting several universities and fields of science represents a distinctive Hungarian model in which interconnected educational programmes, research infrastructure, a scientific journal and scholarship schemes form an expanding animal welfare research ecosystem.
The university highlighted cooperation between veterinary science and legal studies, as well as postgraduate programmes specializing in animal protection and welfare.
It also pointed to the launch of the region’s first interdisciplinary, bilingual scientific journal dedicated to animal welfare.
The journal, Acta Animalia Hungarica, has made its content available through its renewed website.
The University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest has also established a scholarship scheme to support the next generation of researchers in the field.
The Animal Protection Is Our Common Cause Foundation has announced scholarship applications for six postgraduate programmes at partner institutions. Applications remain open on Tuesday and Wednesday, the statement said.
