A 27-year-old Jordanian man living in Budapest has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out hundreds of online fraud attempts against a major American bank using stolen credit card data, Hungarian police said on Monday.
According to the National Bureau of Investigation, the case began earlier this year after an American financial institution filed a complaint via the FBI’s Hungarian office. Authorities subsequently opened criminal proceedings on suspicion of fraud involving the misuse of an information system.
Investigators found that fraudulent transactions linked to one of the bank’s high-profile clients had taken place between January 2024 and December 2025 using the victim’s credit card details. In total, the suspect allegedly attempted 308 fraudulent online transactions worth more than 721,000 US dollars.
Police said the man used the stolen card information to make purchases and bookings on various online platforms, with a large portion of the transactions carried out through an international accommodation booking website.
The investigation traced several IP addresses and email accounts used during the fraud attempts to Hungarian internet service providers. Detectives also linked the activity to a Hungarian phone number that had been provided as contact information when renting a Budapest apartment last December.
Authorities subsequently identified the suspect as a Jordanian national with a Hungarian residence permit. Officers from the National Bureau of Investigation and a tactical unit arrested him on 6 May in Budapest.
During searches of the property, police seized electronic devices believed to have been used in the fraud scheme, along with suspected narcotics residue found inside the apartment. The electronic equipment is currently undergoing forensic examination, while experts are analysing the suspected drug-related materials.
The suspect was questioned on charges of fraud committed through an information system and drug possession. He was later taken into custody, and a court has ordered his pre-trial detention.
