Budapest police announced on Friday that the death of a prominent Hungarian athlete found dead in his apartment earlier this year was most likely caused by an accident rather than foul play.
Speaking at a press conference following the closure of the investigation, Budapest Police Headquarters spokesperson Soma Csécsi said investigators determined that the man’s death was likely the result of an accidental fall.
Although the spokesperson did not identify the athlete by name, Hungarian media previously reported that the investigation concerned world champion kayaker Miklós Dudás.
According to police, authorities received a report on 5 January that the athlete had been unreachable for several days. Officers forced entry into his Budapest apartment, where they discovered his body.
Initial crime scene examinations found no evidence suggesting the involvement of another person. However, injuries discovered during the autopsy prompted investigators to launch a probe on suspicion of bodily harm resulting in death, as it was initially unclear whether the injuries were caused by an accident or assault.
Soma Csécsi said the investigation included witness interviews, analysis of mobile phone location data, examination of surveillance camera footage and multiple forensic expert reports, including medical and toxicological evaluations.
‘The investigation established, also taking into account forensic medical and toxicological expert opinions, that the man’s death could have been caused by an accidental fall,’ the spokesperson said, adding that the investigation was officially closed on 6 May.
Police stated that investigators found no evidence or circumstances indicating that the athlete had been murdered.
