On Wednesday the Budapest General Assembly adopted a resolution approving a proposal package aimed at facilitating government support for capital city housing programmes, optimizing the use of existing housing and real estate assets, improving housing affordability, and expanding the city’s housing supply along with the affordable rental sector.
In his submission titled ‘Proposals for Affordable Housing’, Mayor Gergely Karácsony argued that easing the capital’s housing crisis requires initiatives from both the Budapest and district municipalities, the targeted use of European Union development funds, and a more active role from the central government than in previous years.
Under the resolution, a majority of councillors are calling on the government to promptly issue calls for housing programmes in Budapest financed by the EU’s structural funds. To this end, the Mayor will approach the relevant minister responsible for this mandate.
