A local woman has been arrested in Ceuta after an illegal migrant from Morocco was fatally stabbed inside a family home on Thursday morning.
According to local media, the illegal migrant was killed with a bladed weapon, probably a knife, following a dispute inside the residence. Several sources identified the victim as a relative of the woman, more specifically describing him as her cousin.
Europa Press said the man was in Spain illegally and had gone to the home of relatives before a dispute broke out, although investigators have yet to establish exactly what triggered the confrontation.
Some Spanish outlets reported that the victim had entered Ceuta during the mass invasion of 30–31 July and had sought accommodation from his relative. Both EFE and Europa Press said authorities had not established whether he was among those who crossed illegally during the July invasion, while Antena 3 cited police-union sources claiming he had swum into Ceuta a month earlier.
The homicide comes amid continuing tensions in the Spanish enclave after more than 80,000 migrants entered Ceuta illegally from Morocco on 30 and 31 July, overwhelming a city with a population of around 84,000. Thousands remain in Ceuta, many living in temporary facilities or scattered around the city. The security situation in the enclave, as shown by the current incident, is deteriorating day by day.
Thousands of residents marched through Ceuta on Wednesday under the slogan ‘Ceuta no se vende, Ceuta se defiende’—‘Ceuta is not for sale, Ceuta must be defended’—as demonstrations were held across Spain demanding stronger border controls and action from the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Pressure on Madrid has intensified further after a National Police intelligence report said Moroccan gendarmes and plain-clothes officers had helped guide the mass crossing, contradicting the Sánchez government’s previous dismissal of Moroccan involvement.
