Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali has praised the renovated Hungaroring ahead of this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, saying the circuit’s extensive upgrades have exceeded expectations and that Formula 1 is ready to discuss a long-term extension of its partnership with the venue.
Speaking to Formula.hu in an interview marking the circuit’s 40th anniversary and the upcoming 41st Hungarian Grand Prix, Domenicali said few could have imagined the scale of the transformation when the track first joined the Formula 1 calendar in 1986.
He described the renovated facility as ‘impressive’ and said he was proud that the promoter and the Hungarian government had fulfilled their commitment to provide Formula 1 with top-quality infrastructure.
According to Domenicali, Hungary’s commitment to Formula 1 is viewed very positively within the international motorsport community. He said the country has consistently treated the championship as a strategic investment regardless of which government has been in office since the inaugural Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Formula 1 chief also highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Hungaroring Sport Zrt President and CEO Zsolt Gyulay and promoter Ariane Frank-Meulenbelt, describing the stable partnership as beneficial for the sport.
Domenicali said he looks forward to working with Hungary’s new government, including Prime Minister Péter Magyar and cabinet ministers. He expressed confidence that they would recognise both the effort invested in the event and its economic impact on the country, adding that Formula 1 would welcome their attendance at the race.

Looking beyond the current contract, Domenicali said the Hungaroring’s continuous presence on the Formula 1 calendar since 1986 demonstrates its importance to the championship. Combined with the completed renovations, he said, this provides a strong basis for discussions about the circuit’s future beyond the current agreement.
Although he declined to provide specific details, Domenicali indicated that the Hungaroring is among the venues being considered to host a Formula 1 sprint weekend in the future. Six sprint events are scheduled this season, with additional sprint races planned for next year.
The 41st Hungarian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday at 3pm, with practice sessions beginning on Friday.
