A driver fleeing police near Lake Velence was eventually caught in a sunflower field after his car became disabled and caught fire, the Fejér County Police Headquarters said on police.hu on Wednesday.

Police spotted the car in Velence last Saturday afternoon after their license plate recognition system indicated that its technical inspection had expired. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated away at high speed.

During the chase, the driver repeatedly exceeded the speed limit, crossed a solid line, drove through a restricted area, overtook illegally, and failed to give way. He also endangered oncoming traffic and drove through an intersection in Gárdony despite a red traffic light.

The driver repeatedly steered the vehicle towards police cars that were following him or attempting to pull alongside.

Four passengers were also travelling in the car and jumped out while the vehicle was moving. The driver left Route 7 and first drove onto a cycle path before leaving the road near a bridge over a drainage canal and entering a sunflower field.

The vehicle eventually became immobilized and caught fire in the field. Police deployed a drone to track the fleeing driver and quickly located both the burning car and the suspect, who was arrested and taken into custody.

The 49-year-old man from Győr did not have a driving license and had previously been banned from driving. Police also found a mobile phone in his possession that had been reported stolen in Győr one day earlier.

He was therefore questioned as a suspect in the ongoing phone theft investigation being conducted by the Győr Police. Gárdony Police also filed a report against him for driving while banned and for more than 30 traffic offences committed during the pursuit.

The Budapest Regional Investigative Prosecutor’s Office will handle the investigation into criminal offences allegedly committed against police officers.
