The Hungarian government has approved a series of wide-ranging decisions, including plans to submit a legislative package next week aimed at facilitating the repatriation of approximately 6,000 billion forints in European Union funds, Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced on his Facebook page on Friday.
According to the prime minister, the cabinet also ordered an immediate investigation into the procurement of ventilators purchased for hundreds of billions of forints during the Covid-19 pandemic. The review will focus on the circumstances and value of the large-scale emergency medical equipment acquisitions.
The government further decided to abolish the current teacher evaluation system, alongside launching audits into major infrastructure and institutional operations, including the Budapest–Belgrade railway investment and the functioning of the National Chamber of Agriculture.
Magyar also announced stricter regulations on outdoor advertising, stating that the government intends to significantly tighten rules governing billboards and visual installations in public spaces in an effort to reduce what he described as ‘visual environmental pollution’.
Additional measures include a review of political party financing rules and the regulation of non-Hungarian guest workers arriving from third countries. The government indicated that in certain areas, immediate restrictions or bans have already been introduced.
Environmental and industrial policy decisions were also included in the package: the government plans to reassess Hungary’s waste management concession system, introduce a logging moratorium in protected natural areas, and restructure permitting rules for battery industry investments.
The announcement suggests a broad policy agenda spanning EU funds, education reform, infrastructure oversight, environmental protection, labour regulation, and industrial policy.
