A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Budapest, Hungary, for allegedly collecting human body parts from abandoned cemeteries and from his workplace at a hospital, the Associated Press reports.

The suspect, who worked as an orderly at a local hospital, admitted to digging up human remains from graves in cemeteries in Hungary and Slovakia during questioning, and even claimed to have cooked and eaten some of it. He did not exclusively collect human parts, with laboratory testing yet to determine what parts found in his apartment came from animals and what parts came from human beings.

Police have seized skulls, a complete lower leg and a hand, as well as a reconstruction of a human face prepared from facial skin from the suspect’s apartment. Some bones, as well as a heart in a jar, are not yet confirmed to be of human origin.

The man was arrested by Budapest police on 17 June after receiving a tip from the public.

The suspect’s laptop and other electronic devices were also taken by law enforcement for further investigation. He is being charged with illegal use of human bodies. Police warn that his crimes may not be limited to the illegal collection of human remains.

The morbid news out of Budapest has received international coverage, with even CNN World carrying the AP’s reporting on their website.
