Hungary is set to enter a new phase of railway development after years of decline, according to incoming transport and investment minister Dávid Vitézy, who pledged a strategic shift towards rebuilding the country’s rail network.
Speaking in Komló on Saturday, Vitézy said the era of ‘railway dismantling’ was coming to an end, to be replaced by a period focused on development and modernization. His remarks came after he travelled on a symbolic special train from Dombóvár to Komló alongside local residents and rail supporters, marking the closure of the line between the two towns in 2023.
Vitézy stated that railway investments would be carried out in line with the programme of the Tisza Party, under the leadership of prime minister-designate Péter Magyar. He added that one of the first priorities would be to relaunch and redevelop the Komló–Dombóvár railway line.
‘We will begin rebuilding both rural transport and Hungary’s railway system after taking over what has effectively been left in ruins,’ he said, criticizing outgoing transport minister János Lázár.
He noted that the closure of ten regional railway lines in 2023 marked what he considered the beginning of a broader dismantling of the rail network. The Komló–Dombóvár line, he argued, symbolizes the wider challenges facing Hungary’s regional transport infrastructure.
Vitézy also addressed concerns that reopening railway lines could disrupt road traffic, stressing that modern technical solutions can minimize such impacts. ‘We must ensure that rail development does not disadvantage road users,’ he said, adding that improved signalling and infrastructure could reduce waiting times at crossings.
Local MP-elect Áron Kovács echoed the need for investment, saying the region must strengthen its economic and transport connections to fully integrate into the national network.
The proposed reforms signal a broader policy shift aimed at revitalizing rural mobility and restoring Hungary’s rail system as a key component of national infrastructure.
