Hungary’s transport operators have strengthened emergency response and standby services as the country faces an ongoing heatwave, Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced on Facebook on Sunday.
The minister urged travellers to take extra care of themselves and those around them while using public transport or travelling by road.
Hungary’s Chief Medical Officer has issued a second-level heat alert covering the entire country until Tuesday. In response, Vitézy asked transport operators to place even greater emphasis on passenger safety during the extreme weather.
During the heat alert, MÁV Group and GYSEV are providing free drinking water at several railway and bus stations from Saturday onward. Misting gates have also been installed at the busiest stations, with additional locations to be equipped if necessary.
Many railway and bus stations across the country also offer access to drinking water, while passenger assistance teams remain on standby at major transport hubs.
Vitézy added that he had also instructed Hungarian Public Roads and motorway concession operators to prepare for the extreme temperatures.
Should major traffic congestion develop on Hungary’s motorway network, operators must be ready to distribute drinking water to stranded motorists if required.
The minister also asked road operators to schedule maintenance work in a way that minimizes disruption during the heat alert wherever possible.
Enhanced duty and standby services have been introduced across transport operators and infrastructure managers to ensure rapid intervention in the event of technical failures or other emergencies caused by the high temperatures.
Vitézy encouraged anyone travelling over the coming days to carry sufficient drinking water, avoid long journeys during the hottest part of the day where possible, and check traffic conditions before setting out.
