Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota is involved in a scandal after The Wall Street Journal revealed that she had revised her and her husband's net worth from $30 million to just $100,000 in her financial disclosure. Additional scrutiny of their financial report found a winery, valued at millions of dollars, which does not seem to be selling any wine.

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has been under a lot of scrutiny for the major discrepancies in her financial disclosures submitted to Congress.

In her 2024 report, the progressive Democrat lawmaker originally claimed that she and her husband have assets worth around $30 million combined. However, as The Wall Street Journal revealed last week, she has revised her disclosure to a net worth of just around $100,000—a stunning 99.7 per cent drop in her disclosed net worth.

What’s more, her attorney gave a less-than-satisfactory reason for why the major revision took place. The lawyer claims it was simply an accounting error, describing it as ‘unfortunate’ but not criminal, and pointed out that lawmakers tend to rely on accounts for their financial disclosures.

Evidently, however, this did not sit well with the members of the House Oversight Committee, which is currently chaired by Republican Congressman James Comer of Kentucky.

Talking to Sean Hannity on Fox News, Comer suggested that the major revision in Representative Omar’s disclosure was not a mistake, but deliberate falsification, which, according to Comer, could amount to felony charges for his colleague from Minnesota.

One business among Omar’s assets got particular attention online.

Ilhan Omar’s 2024 report valued the ESTCRU winery based in California, owned by her and her husband, at $1 million–$5 million. However, when users looked up the winery’s official Facebook page, they found that the last public post was from January 2023—not what you would expect from a multimillion-dollar alcoholic beverage business.

Furthermore, the site linked to their Facebook page is no longer operational as the domain has expired. With no physical address easily accessible either, this begs the question: where exactly could one get themselves a bottle of ESTCRU wine, if they are inclined to do so?

What gives a special context to Congresswoman Omar’s alleged fraud scandal is that she is a woman of Somali descent in Minnesota. Earlier this year, an investigation by online personality Nick Shirley uncovered a major fraud scheme in which Minnesota residents of Somali origin defrauded the state government of millions of dollars by receiving funds for fraudulent child care facilities.

The scandal led to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Vice Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in the 2024 presidential election, announcing that he would not be seeking reelection this fall.
