At least five people were killed and five others seriously or critically injured when a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft crashed at Miami International Airport, local authorities said. Several people were trapped in vehicles struck by the aircraft after it ran beyond the runway.

At least five people were killed, and five others were seriously or critically injured in a cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, authorities in Miami-Dade County said in an updated statement Sunday evening.

At a joint press conference, officials said three people were in critical condition, and two others were seriously injured and receiving hospital treatment.

Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said several people were trapped in vehicles struck by the Boeing 767-300 after the aircraft overran the runway. The plane’s pilot was also unable to leave the cockpit after the aircraft tipped onto its nose, he said.

The crash occurred at around 2pm local time, according to an earlier statement. The aircraft caught fire after the accident and burned with large flames and heavy smoke. More than 60 fire-rescue units were dispatched to tackle the blaze.

Miami International Airport, one of the country’s busiest international airports, was closed for several hours following the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident. The agency said the aircraft had arrived from Puerto Rico.

Amazon Air confirmed that an aircraft belonging to the company but operated by an outside partner was involved in an accident while landing. The company did not provide further details, saying its priority was the safety, well-being, care and support of everyone affected.
