Nadhir Benbouali, the 26-year-old striker playing for the reigning Hungarian champions ETO FC Győr, scored for his national team, Algeria, against Jordan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, 23 June.
This is the first time a player from the Hungarian league has scored at the World Cup since Lajos Détári in 1986. Attacking midfielder Détári made the Hungarian squad from Budapest Honvéd, and scored the second goal for Hungary in a 2–0 win for his side over Canada. This remains the last goal scored by the Hungarian national team at the FIFA World Cup.
Algeria took on Jordan at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in Group J at the 2026 World Cup. Underdogs Jordan took the lead in the 36th minute. Győr hero Benbouali was brought on as a substitute at half-time, replacing Hicham Boudaoui from the French Ligue 1 club Nice.
In the 69th minute, Riyad Mahrez of Al Ahli (and English Premier League winner with his former clubs Leicester City and Manchester City) delivered a corner to near the Jordanian six-yard box, where it was met with a header from Benbouali, who guided the ball into the bottom far corner. Algeria pulled level.
This was Benbouali’s first goal for Algeria in his fifth appearance.
The Algerians went on to find the winner as well, with Amine Gouiri of Olympique de Marseille scoring in the 82nd minute.
With that, Algeria sit third in Group J with three points, behind Leo Messi’s Argentina with six points and Austria with three points and a better goal difference, but ahead of Jordan in fourth place with 0 points after two rounds.
Nadhir Benbouali is one of three players to make their respective national team squads for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from the Hungarian league. The other two are Ferencváros striker Lenny Joseph for Haiti and Puskás Akadémia midfielder Loris Duarte for Cape Verde.
