Hungarian police have arrested a Slovak national in Budapest who is suspected of carrying out a series of ATM bombings and robberies in Slovakia, according to the police.hu.
Authorities said the suspect allegedly targeted several cash machines in Slovakia in May 2026, using explosives before stealing money from the damaged ATMs. After the incidents, the man reportedly travelled to Hungary by car and hid in a property in Budapest’s ninth district.
Following intelligence received from Slovak and Czech law enforcement agencies, investigators from the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) and officers from the National Protective Service conducted a joint operation to identify the suspect’s whereabouts.
The man was already the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by Slovak authorities.
As a result of the investigation, and with support from the Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK), officers arrested the 28-year-old Slovak citizen in the underground garage of a residential building in Budapest’s Ferencváros district on 12 June.
Police described the suspect as a repeat offender with previous convictions for armed robbery and other serious crimes.
During a search of his apartment, investigators recovered several items believed to be linked to the alleged offences, including a mask, headlamp, stolen licence plates, a bulletproof vest, gloves and a rubber-bullet firearm.
Officers also seized equipment capable of being used to activate explosive devices, including timing mechanisms, radio-controlled remote devices and detonators.
The BRFK has launched criminal proceedings against the suspect on suspicion of offences involving explosive materials and explosive devices. He has also been taken into custody under the European arrest warrant.
Police noted that the man is not suspected of carrying out any bombing-related offences in Hungary. Discussions are therefore underway with foreign authorities regarding his extradition to Slovakia.
