Hungary’s electricity demand during Sunday’s evening peak was 700 megawatts lower than expected, following a public appeal to reduce energy consumption, Economy and Energy Minister István Kapitány said in a Facebook post.
According to the minister, electricity demand reached 5,700 megawatts at 7pm, compared with the projected 6,400 megawatts.
Kapitány said the reduction was equivalent to the output of more than one reactor at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, describing it as an achievement made possible by households across the country in a single evening.
The minister also shared messages he had received from members of the public in response to the government’s energy-saving campaign.
He said one parent wrote that their six-year-old son proudly walks around the house each evening turning off lights because ‘he is helping the country’.
Another family told the minister they had started spending their evenings playing board games instead of watching television, while a pensioner said he had chosen to sit outside on his terrace during the hot weather and spend the evening talking with neighbours, as he had done in his childhood.
Kapitány said Hungary’s history has repeatedly shown that people come together in difficult times.
He thanked the public for their cooperation and added that while the most challenging period still lies ahead, the past few days had demonstrated that Hungary can overcome difficulties when people act together.
