British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and two other senior Cabinet ministers have reportedly told Keir Starmer to set out a resignation timeline, as the British prime minister faces a rapidly escalating internal revolt following Labour’s disastrous election performance across the United Kingdom over the weekend.
More than 60 Labour MPs are now reportedly demanding that Starmer either resign or announce when he intends to step down, while multiple government aides and parliamentary private secretaries resigned within hours of his latest attempt to stabilize his leadership through a major speech on Monday.

Among those resigning were Joe Morris, parliamentary private secretary to Health Secretary Wes Streeting; Tom Rutland, aide to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds; Cabinet Office aide Naushabah Khan; and Melanie Ward, an aide to Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Sally Jameson, a parliamentary aide to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, also joined calls for Starmer to stand aside.
The revolt comes after Labour suffered historic losses in local elections across England, Scotland, and Wales, losing hundreds of council seats while Reform UK and the Greens made significant gains.
Several Labour MPs and former ministers now argue that Starmer has become electorally toxic and is incapable of reconnecting with voters. Tom Rutland stated that the prime minister had ‘lost authority’ both within the Labour Party and across the country, while Joe Morris said Starmer ‘no longer has the trust or confidence of the public’.
MPs have also reportedly grown increasingly frustrated over Labour’s declining poll numbers, dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of immigration and the economy, disputes surrounding welfare reforms, tensions over Gaza policy, and the party’s inability to counter the growing popularity of Nigel Farage and Reform UK.

Starmer’s critics additionally argue that his government lacks a coherent ideological identity, with Labour simultaneously losing working-class voters to Reform UK and progressive voters to the Greens.
The crisis has fuelled speculation regarding possible successors. Health Secretary Wes Streeting, former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham are all increasingly discussed as potential replacements. Allies of Streeting are reportedly among the MPs pressuring Starmer to leave office.
Former minister Catherine West has already begun informally gauging support for a leadership transition and argued that Labour should have a new leader in place by September.
Pressure is also mounting from the opposition, with Farage calling for a snap general election, arguing that Starmer no longer possesses a legitimate governing mandate following Labour’s collapse in the local elections.
Despite the mounting pressure from every direction, Starmer refused to resign during Monday’s remarks. Attempting to project defiance, he declared that he was ‘not going anywhere’ and insisted that Labour would ‘fight and win again’. He also warned MPs against ‘turning inward in panic’ and argued that replacing him now would risk plunging Britain back into political chaos.
