Hungarian television channel TV2 will discontinue its long-running news program Tények, the broadcaster’s president and CEO Miklós Vaszily confirmed in an interview published by 444.hu on Thursday.
Speaking about a wider restructuring of the channel, Vaszily said the renewal of TV2’s infotainment programming is already underway, arguing that changes were necessary due to what he described as the erosion of the Tények brand.
According to the executive, the goal is to launch new brands that, after lessons learned from previous operations, can provide news coverage that meets expected professional standards.
Reports by 444.hu also indicated that the Napló current affairs magazine programme could be affected by the reorganization.
Vaszily had already signalled major upcoming changes earlier this week during the Media Hungary conference, where he spoke about a complete overhaul of the channel’s structure and operations, adding that consolidation measures would also be necessary.
Tények, first launched in 1997, has long been one of Hungary’s best-known television news broadcasts.
Reacting to the announcement, Péter Magyar, Hungary’s incoming prime minister and leader of the Tisza Party, wrote on Facebook that Tények had been ‘the most disgraceful programme in the history of Hungarian media’ and described it as ‘the flagship of Orbán-era propaganda.’
