Researchers at Budapest Business University (BGE) have developed a science-based ecological footprint calculator for businesses, providing companies with a practical tool to assess their environmental impact and support sustainability-related decision-making.

According to the university, the application presents users with an easy-to-understand indicator that highlights the areas where their operations generate the greatest environmental burden, helping businesses prioritize measures that can deliver the most significant improvements.

BGE said the tool is intended to simplify the process of setting sustainability targets while also supporting business competitiveness. More efficient energy use, transport, resource management and waste reduction can lower operating costs alongside reducing environmental impacts.

The calculator is the result of several years of research, with testing beginning in 2019. The university said the application is unique in that it has been specifically designed around the characteristics of Hungarian micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), using their accounting and operational data to quantify their ecological footprint.

Researchers noted that many companies can reduce their environmental impact through relatively simple and low-cost measures, including more efficient energy consumption, route optimization, and digitalization, all of which can also improve operational efficiency.

The calculator is available free of charge to participants in the Budapest Global Corporate Climate Sprint, a programme running until November. BGE is supporting the initiative as a professional partner.

Registration for the programme is available through the Budapest Global innovation platform, which was established by the Budapest municipal government in 2021 to promote sustainable business innovation.
