According to the final ruling of a Bucharest court of appeal on Wednesday, the red-white-green flags must be removed from the mayor’s office, the council chamber and all places where they are currently displayed in the city hall building.
The removal of the flags had been initiated by the Civic Association for Dignity in Europe (ADEC), which acted on behalf of the Romanians of Seklerland and which had complained against the use of Hungarian symbols and language in Romanian institutions.
In June last year, a Bucharest first instance court decided that the flags are symbols of Hungary and ordered their removal.
In the current lawsuit, the mayor’s representatives argued that the red-white-green flags were received from the Hungarian twin settlements of Székelyudvarhely and were displayed as a token of respect, along with the flags received from the Polish and Slovak twin cities. According to the court ruling, only the Hungarian symbols must be removed.
