The growing adoption of artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping corporate IT strategies, as many companies find their existing infrastructure unable to support new demands, according to a new report by Deloitte.
In its Deloitte Tech Trends 2026 study, the consultancy highlights that the increasing cost of running already trained AI models, along with challenges related to scalability and response speed, is forcing businesses to rethink where and how AI-driven processes should operate.
The rapid evolution of generative AI capable of producing new content has accelerated business innovation but also exposed critical weaknesses in IT infrastructure. Beyond rising costs, companies must also address data storage regulations, ensure fast response times, protect intellectual property, and maintain system resilience.
According to the report, a carefully designed hybrid model based on workload distribution could offer a solution, aligning technological capabilities with business priorities.
The analysis also underscores the growing importance of safeguarding intellectual property. Many companies continue to store their most sensitive data on on-premises systems, leading to caution around adopting external AI services. These concerns are contributing to a global wave of investment in data centres.
Deloitte notes that the infrastructure shift will also require significant workforce reskilling. As AI becomes central to corporate strategy, decisions about computing architecture are increasingly being elevated to the board level.
Companies that proactively align their IT infrastructure, workforce strategies, and sustainability goals with an ‘AI-first’ approach are likely to gain a lasting competitive advantage in the coming decade, the report concludes.
