A new generation of mobile camera systems could significantly transform traffic monitoring and enforcement, according to a report by Világgazdaság.
The technology, developed by the R&D laboratory of the Asura Group, APS Solutions, combines artificial intelligence-driven video analytics with traffic surveillance hardware to create flexible, multi-purpose monitoring systems.
Unlike traditional fixed cameras and speed enforcement devices, these mobile systems can be rapidly deployed, easily relocated and used for multiple functions, including vehicle identification, traffic analysis and even environmental monitoring.
At the core of the company’s solutions is automatic vehicle identification, which goes beyond standard licence plate recognition. Using proprietary neural networks, the system can not only read licence plates with high accuracy but also categorize vehicles in detail.
This allows for more precise monitoring than conventional systems, which could be particularly useful for toll enforcement or municipalities seeking to regulate heavy vehicle traffic.
One of the solutions is a vehicle-mounted system capable of scanning licence plates of parked cars while in motion and cross-checking them with databases. This could significantly improve the efficiency of parking enforcement, enabling authorities to cover larger areas in a shorter time compared to traditional methods.
Another development is a mobile, solar-powered pole system that operates independently of the electrical grid. These units can be installed within hours and easily relocated as needed. They are capable of monitoring traffic and identifying vehicle types, and can be equipped with environmental sensors to collect data on noise levels or air pollution.
A third solution is a mobile monitoring platform that can be mounted on a trailer, primarily for use on motorways or temporary work zones. The system can measure vehicle speed, display it to drivers and issue warnings if a vehicle approaches a construction area too quickly.
By deploying multiple devices, authorities can also calculate average speeds over a given road section with high accuracy. According to developers, the visible presence of such systems alone can influence driver behaviour and improve road safety.
