Animated Star Wars series are known not to disappoint. Clone Wars is applauded as one of the best Star Wars stories of all time. On 6 April 2026, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord was released on Disney+. It was directed by Dave Filoni, the showrunner of Clone Wars. Two episodes were released weekly with the finale dropping on 4 May, Star Wars Day. After great reception from both audiences and critics, the show has been already renewed for a second season.
When talking about the show, there are two questions that need to be answered first, especially if you did not watch the entirety of Clone Wars (although if that’s the case, I’d recommend doing so as soon as possible). The first is: Didn’t Maul die in the Phantom Menace?
Technically, he did not. During the movie, he is cut in half by Obi-Wan and drops down a reactor shaft, however, the injuries sustained did not kill him. He returns in the Clone Wars with a robotic lower half and joins the Death Watch, taking control of different criminal organizations (this storyline is referenced in the series quite a bit).
The other question is the timeline. While there hasn’t been official confirmation, the general consensus is that the events take place about one year after Revenge of the Sith.
The Story
From this point in the article, there WILL be spoilers, although I will try to avoid show-stopping ones. If you’d like to avoid everything, skip this part of the article to cast and production.
After the conclusion of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire is trying to tighten its grip on the galaxy. Former Sith Lord Darth Maul is attempting to rebuild his criminal empire on Janix, where the Empire has not set foot yet. The main area for the story is a metropolis built in a crater surrounded by a jungle.
After his losses, he has to try to rebuild his empire with low resources, scheming to turn members of the current underworld against each other, so he may come out on top with intimidation and cunning. Meanwhile, Brander Lawson, a veteran police detective on Janix, investigates a series of disappearances linked to Imperial black sites with his droid partner, Two-Boots.
Devon Izara and her Jedi Master, Eeko-Dio-Daki, are introduced hiding in Janix’s jungle outskirts. Devon is a Padawan who survived Order 66. Recognizing her potential as a potential apprentice, Maul attempts to pull her toward the dark side and into his orbit.
Later, detective Lawson’s investigations cause the Empire to descend upon Janix, with ruthless Inquisitor Marrok, who is hunting the two Jedi, and Maul as well. The Empire’s arrival stirs up both storylines: as Lawson helps the two Jedi, he is branded a traitor to the Empire. This leads to all the main characters, Devon, Daki, Maul, Lawson, his partner and his son being hunted by the Inquisitors and stormtroopers.
This leads to an unusual alliance in the Star Wars universe, as Maul, the Jedi and the detective join forces to try and escape the Empire. Maul’s character is unveiled during the story, so we can better understand his motivation, his loss and the betrayal he had to endure in the past. While he tries to get closer to Devon, there seems to be real humanity in him, although he is trying to convince her to give in to her anger.
The two final episodes are both well written, action packed and surprising. Rated 9.5 and 9.8 on IMDb respectively, they are the crown jewels of the show, as one would expect. During the unusual alliance’s escape they encounter challenges and work together toward their final goal, losing some members on the way. Episode 9 ends with an insane reveal, as Darth Vader steps out of the fog in the jungle.
The final, top rated episode features Maul vs Darth Vader, the two Jedi fighting the two Inquisitors and sacrifices by both sides. Vader against Maul seemed an unnatural pairing, but one of the best I’ve seen in a while. Yet I wonder that if either of them mentioned Obi-Wan, they could have bonded over their hate toward him and not fought at all. Since this is easily the best episode of the series, I urge you to watch it instead of reading how the rest of it goes…
The Cast and Production
Shadow Lord was developed by Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz, with Sam Witwer actively contributing to script development and character depth as he has through multiple Star Wars projects. Athena Portillo, Lucasfilm VP of Animation, noted that Witwer’s involvement has been ‘pristine’ and that ‘Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation.’
The animation is described as building on the visual language of The Clone Wars but is more stylized, reflecting Maul’s fractured psychology and the noir-like atmosphere of Janix.
The series uses hand-painted style visuals to give Janix a moody, noir atmosphere. Action sequences are widely praised for their fluid choreography and emotional weight.
Witwer has described the show as picking up when Maul is ‘dusting himself off a bit’ after events in previous animated series, and it reveals new traits that make ‘perfect sense from what he’s been through’. Sam Witwer’s portrayal of Maul continues to be a highlight, with the series allowing him to explore new dimensions of the character, a role he reprised from Clone Wars and Rebels.
Final Thoughts
The show proudly distinguishes itself as an action-thriller with noir elements. It has been widely applauded by critics and casual viewers alike for the careful construction of Janix and how it represents an ensemble of characters trying to survive the Empire’s encroachment rather than a traditional ‘heroes versus villains’ story.
There’s a sort of psychological depth in Maul’s character. Witwer portrays him incredibly, where you still fear him and see his duplicitous, vengeful side; however, you notice that he is deeply wounded and humiliated. Yet he does not give up on his ultimate plan of vengeance.
The moral conundrum of Devon’s character, who is lauded by some as one of the best new characters added to the Star Wars universe since Din Djarin, leads to even the viewers debating whether she should give in to Maul’s temptation, as it might be her only path to survival. She might be the student Maul always wanted.
Some critics found the police B-plot slower than the main arc. And while I can understand that it seems a bit trivial compared to Maul’s godfather-like arc, it provides necessary exposition, and the inclusion of a family dynamic as well.
Personally, I’ve never been fond of animated series or movies, however, in this case I feel it is completely justified. Animation allows creative freedom to establish these characters without constraints and create stunning visuals during action sequences (for a fraction of the cost).
The ending, the introduction of Darth Vader and the storyline set for an easy continuance in season 2 are masterful. This being one of the highest rated Star Wars series is justified—I can only recommend watching it. If you’re a hardcore Star Wars fan, you will love it. If you’re a casual Star Wars fan, you will love it. If you’re just looking for an exciting thriller with noir elements set in a creative world, you will love it. I have loved it.
