Hungary’s Prime Minister-designate Péter Magyar announced on Friday that he has nominated Márta Görög, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at the University of Szeged, to serve as justice minister in the incoming Tisza Party government.
In a statement published on Facebook, Magyar described the professor as ‘the uncrowned queen of the Hungarian legal profession,’ praising her academic, professional and public service work over the past two and a half decades.
He said her experience and expertise would help rebuild constitutional order, the rule of law, legal certainty and Hungary’s system of checks and balances.
According to Magyar, Márta Görög is one of Hungary’s leading legal scholars. She serves on the presidency of the Hungarian Lawyers’ Association and is also a member of the State and Legal Sciences Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Alongside her academic work, she has played a prominent role in higher education quality assurance as head of the Accreditation College of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee.
Magyar said one of her key priorities as justice minister would be restoring the professional quality of legislation and ensuring greater transparency in the lawmaking process.
He added that future legislation should be preceded by meaningful professional and public consultation, while independent oversight institutions and authorities must operate on a professional basis free from political influence.
The incoming prime minister also said the justice ministry would be responsible for establishing the legal conditions necessary to unlock European Union funding currently withheld from Hungary.
Magyar argued that Márta Görög’s strategic approach, institution-building experience and leadership background make her well suited to achieving those goals.
The nomination follows the withdrawal of previous justice minister nominee Márton Melléthei-Barna, who stepped aside on Thursday citing concerns that his close personal ties to Péter Magyar could undermine public confidence in the incoming government’s reform agenda.
