Hungary’s new Tisza government officially entered office on Tuesday after President Tamás Sulyok formally appointed the sixteen ministers of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s cabinet during a ceremony at the Sándor Palace. The event also underscored the continuing political tensions between the incoming government and the Fidesz-linked president.

President Tamás Sulyok formally appointed the 16 ministers of Hungary’s new Tisza government during a ceremony held at the Sándor Palace on Tuesday afternoon, officially completing the formation of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s cabinet.

Under Hungary’s Fundamental Law, ministers are appointed by the president upon the recommendation of the prime minister. With the formal appointment of the ministers, the new government officially entered office.

The newly appointed ministers are:

  • Szabolcs Bóna as Minister for Agriculture and Food Economy;
  • László Gajdos as Minister for the Living Environment;
  • Márta Görög as Minister of Justice;
  • Zsolt Hegedűs as Minister of Health;
  • István Kapitány as Minister for Economy and Energy;
  • András Kármán as Minister of Finance;
  • Vilmos Kátai-Németh as Minister for Social and Family Affairs;
  • Judit Lannert as Minister for Children and Education;
  • Anita Orbán as Minister of Foreign Affairs;
  • Viktória Lőrincz as Minister for Regional and Rural Development;
  • Gábor Pósfai as Minister of Interior;
  • Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi as Minister of Defence;
  • Zoltán Tanács as Minister for Science and Technology;
  • Zoltán Tarr as Minister for Social Relations and Culture;
  • Bálint Ruff as Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office;
  • and Dávid Vitézy as Minister for Transport and Investment.

The ceremony also highlighted the continuing tensions between the incoming Tisza government and President Tamás Sulyok, who had been elected under the previous Fidesz–KDNP parliamentary majority.

On Monday, Magyar publicly called on Sulyok not to appear in joint photographs with the incoming ministers. Today, shortly before the appointment ceremony, Magyar wrote on Facebook that members of the Tisza government ‘do not ask for the congratulations of the puppet president of the republic nor for the opportunity of a joint photograph, neither upon receiving their appointments nor after taking their oaths’.

Following the handover of the letters of appointment, the ministers individually turned towards photographers standing beside Péter Magyar rather than posing together with the president.

The new ministers took their official oath of office during the plenary session of the National Assembly on Tuesday afternoon.

Péter Magyar was elected prime minister on 9 May during the inaugural sitting of Hungary’s newly elected parliament.
