André Ventura, the leader of the right-wing populist party Chega in Portugal, had his office at the São Bento Palace, the seat of the Assembly of the Republic, in Lisbon, Portugal, burglarized and ransacked in the early morning hours of Tuesday, 28 July. The populist Portuguese politician has posted video footage of his office after the act of vandalism.
In the caption of his video posted on X, Ventura claims he is not sure yet if any documents were taken by the perp or perps and that he believes that with this incident, his country of Portugal has ‘reached rock bottom in our democracy.’
According to the Portuguese daily paper Diário de Notícias (DN), the break-in was discovered at around 8:15am by a CHEGA lawmaker, who found MP Ventura’s parliamentary office had been vandalized upon arriving at the building.
The office had been thoroughly searched, with cupboards left open and their contents scattered across the room. Documents and photographs were also thrown on the floor. The incident prompted the immediate involvement of Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ).
Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage, which remains one of the central focuses of the investigation. PJ officers are continuing to gather evidence, document the scene, and determine the circumstances of the apparent break-in.
André Ventura has been a close ally of Former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary. His Chega Party is a member of the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament, founded by PM Orbán, and Ventura spoke at CPAC Hungary 2026 in Budapest, Hungary, in March as well.
