Germany is on high alert as a home-made missile launcher was discovered by Cologne police near the Weisweiler power plant in Eschweiler, Germany, on Monday, 7 September. The launcher was reportedly aimed at a high-voltage transmission line that carries electricity from the plant to the public.
The discovery has raised fresh concerns over the security of Germany’s critical energy infrastructure amid a series of recent sabotage attempts.
Last week, there were two attacks on the German power infrastructure.
Improvised explosives detonated and damaged power cables in the state of Brandenburg on 1 September. In a second act of sabotage, unidentified perpetrators reportedly deliberately caused a short circuit by targeting overhead power lines at a substation in Bergheim, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neither incident resulted in widespread power outages, though operations at nearby coal-fired power plants were disrupted.
The German Federal Police has launched a terrorism probe into the incident.
Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt of Germany has told the press that they suspect these sabotage attacks are the work of climate extremists. Law enforcement is looking for 48-year-old Daniel V as their prime suspect in the case.
The suspect has even sent handwritten letters to police claiming responsibility for the first two attacks.
Police have also obtained another letter related to the attack on the Weisweiler power plant. However, it is yet to be determined if that too was written by the wanted Daniel V, or by a copycat criminal.
The police operation also caused temporary traffic disruptions. The A4 motorway between Eschweiler-Ost and Langerwehe was closed for a period as officers searched the area surrounding the Weisweiler power plant and nearby locations, Aktu.news reports.
The motorway has since reopened, but the search for the suspect remains ongoing. Federal authorities are also investigating potential involvement of foreign state agents in the attack.
