Fidesz Parliamentary Faction Leader János Bóka has spoken up against the way Prime Minister Péter Magyar of Hungary’s government has been handling the drought crisis in the country.
As we reported, due to the shallow water levels of the Danube River, Hungary’s only nuclear power plant is set to shut down completely for the first time in 44 years. It is quite ironic that a party whose name is the same as one of the country’s largest rivers, and the supporters of which often chanted ‘the Tisza is flooding’, has to face its first major crisis in power due to low water levels of a river…
In a video posted on social media, MP János Bóka is criticizing the crisis management method of the new Tisza government.
‘There is a task force that has been created to handle this crisis, but it is not an operational task force. This means it is not taking over any decision-making powers from ministries and authorities, so the decision-making process remains the same as in “peace time”,’ he pointed out.
‘So, it is still [Hungarian energy companies] MAVIR, MVM, and Paks [the Paks nuclear plant] that are making the calls. However, it is unclear what the government’s crisis management actually does, apart from asking the population to voluntarily limit their energy consumption. They are asking for a less voluntary reduction of consumption from companies, as they face the threat of being shut off from the power grid or state sanctions.
I don’t see what else the government is doing besides a lot of public communication,’ the opposition leader has stated.
