Seven-year-old William Evans was discovered dead in the closet of her mother Kaitlin Evans’ home in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Wednesday, 11 August. Evans was living in a three-way relationship with trans women Nessa Keaney and Kirby Rankin.
Now, both the two biological men identifying as women and the mother of the victim are being charged with the murder of the little boy, along with child endangerment.
The case started with a 911 call from a nurse in a Cincinnati emergency room. She reported that a woman stumbled into the hospital barefoot, collapsed on the floor, and told the staff that someone was trying to kill her and had also taken her son hostage. That woman was Evans, the victim’s mother.
In response, the police went to the woman’s address for a welfare check and found the child’s corpse in the closet.
The coroner ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. However, she also noted that there were many other injuries found on the boy’s body, including ‘bruises too numerous to count’. The deceased child was also still bound when discovered by law enforcement.
The homicide detective in charge of the case, Kyle Smith, has described the crime as ‘one of the most disturbing examples of child abuse that I’ve witnessed’ and noted that the victim was likely subject to water and burn torture before his death as well, based on his injuries, as reported by the New York Post.
The victim’s grandparents—Evans’ parents—were so suspicious about the boy’s living conditions with her mother and the two trans lovers that they had even hired a private investigator to monitor his well-being. Their grandchild’s extreme reluctance to go home after visiting them heightened their suspicion.
Sadly, the PI investigation did not alert the grandparents in time to prevent the little boy’s death.
